Homestead Exemption in 1-2-3

by | Jan 17, 2023

How to file your homestead exemption this year. (Not sure what this means? We’ve got you!) Read on…

A homestead exemption can give you tax breaks on what you pay in property taxes and can save you thousands. You are eligible if you are filing for your primary residence (that you occupy) and have not already filed homestead for another property in GA this year.

All you have to do is file with the county or city where your home is located. Typically, most homestead exemptions are automatically renewed each year as long as you continually occupy the home under the same ownership so you only have to do this once.

Applications are due before April 1, 2023. Here are your three easy steps to get it done:
  1. Gather your property information
    1. Homeowner Name (that’s you)
    2. Property Address (that’s your crib)
    3. Proof of residency
  2. Parcel ID # found on your tax bill (if you need help looking this up, please email us asap)
  3. Click on the corresponding county and/or city below to file online.
  4. Check this task off your list and move on with your day!

COUNTY LINKS

City of Decatur / Dekalb County – you must file online with both the
City and the County. The City deadline is April 1, 2023. It saves approximately $20,000 off your assessed value. File with the County by April 1, 2023, and it will take about 2/3rds off the County portion of the tax bill.

Dekalb County Unincorporated – File online by April 1, 2023. This should take about 1/3rd off the tax bill.

City of Atlanta / Dekalb County – File online with the County by April
1, 2023 only. It will automatically file with the City. This saves you about $30,000 off your total assessed value and about 2/3rds off your County portion.

City of Atlanta / Fulton County – File with the County and it will automatically file with the City. You have to create an account to fill out the form. This saves you about $30,000 off your assessed value with the City and about $10,000 off your assessed value with the County; it’s well worth the effort!
